How to Save on Gas Money

Whether you are hitting the open road for a weekend get-a-way or have a long weekday commute, paying less at the pump can save you some serious cash! We know that gas prices can skyrocket and plummet without notice, and it can be incredibly stressful when you were looking forward to spending that money on something else. Good news! There are tons of incredibly easy ways to save money when fueling up at the pump so you can use your money for more fun things! Check out the tips we have compiled below!

Check Your Driving Habits!

Drive Less - This doesn’t mean you can never leave your home but instead of taking a few trips into town a day, try getting all your errands done in one go if possible. If you can walk or bike to your destination, go for it! You’re saving gas and getting some fresh air and exercise.

What Time are you Fueling Up? - Gas is cooler earlier in the day and later at night making it denser. As the temperature rises, the density of the gas falls so you get less at the pump. This is especially important during the hottest months of the year. If possible, you should also try to buy gas at the beginning of the week as the prices tend to rise between Wednesday and Saturday.

Steady Driving - When out and about it’s important to make sure that you aren’t accelerating too quickly or slamming on the brakes as this can cause your vehicle to guzzle gas. Keeping a steady foot on the pedals, easing on the gas and slowing down earlier can save you from having to fill up your tank earlier than necessary.

Keeping Your Vehicle in Tip-Top Shape

Tires - Your tires have a huge impact on your vehicle’s fuel economy and when they are under-inflated it can cause them to wear out faster and waste gas! It's super easy to check your tire pressure and fill up at the gas station if needed.

Change Your Filters - If you live in a dusty area, you should be checking your vehicle’s filters regularly because the cleaner the filer, the more efficiently your vehicle will run!

Motor Oil - Make sure you are using the correct motor oil. You can check your owner’s manual to make sure you have using the right oil or do a quick search online. If you are not using the right oil it can cause your vehicle’s engine to work harder, wasting gas.

Plan Ahead

Gas Apps - There are tons of apps available to help you find the cheapest gas near your location. Just a few include GasBuddy, Where.com, Fuel Finder, AroundMe, Gas Cubby, and SmartFuel. These apps can help you save money by finding gas stations that are the closest so you don’t have to travel out of your way or offer the least expensive gas near you, especially when you are in an unfamiliar location.

Plan your Route - Taking a detour or having to turn around because you have gotten lost can waste a lot of gas. Planning your route ahead of time can help you avoid these costly mistakes. If you happen to cross state lines during your trip you may want to look at fuel prices when planning your route as the taxes because the price to skyrocket.
